One study in Brazil involved eighteen average, healthy human volunteers between the ages of twenty and forty years. During the test they were given tea prepared with Stevia leaves for thirty days, and it was found that 10-percent lowering of blood pressure occurred (Boeck, 1981). Although this study gives an indication of stevioside's effects on lowering blood pressure, certainly more human studies are needed before we can know the full vascular effects of stevia consumption.

Weight Control

Stevia has no calories or carbohydrates and thus will in no way contribute to weight gain. Furthermore, it satisfies the body's sweet cravings which will prevent one from further indulging in sugar products. It is no secret that sugar loaded products like candy bars, soft drinks and ice cream contribute to the alarming increase in adult and childhood obesity.

Dental Care

Not only it will not cause cavities, but it actually prevents them. Unlike sugar, Stevia will not contribute to tooth decay. The Hiroshima University School of Dentistry and the Purdue University's dental research group have both researched Stevia and found it to retard plaque accumulation on the teeth and suppress bacterial growth that causes cavities. Many individuals have experienced improved dental health when they have included Stevia in their brushing routine, by adding the concentrate to their toothpaste and diluting it in water as a daily mouthwash.

Stevia can help improve digestion and intestinal functions. It is non reactive to the human digestive tract, it enters the body as a plant extract and then leaves as fiber without irritating the stomach. Stevia helps to relieve constipation.

Stevia is non-fermentable and will not act as a food source for yeast, which makes it perfect for people suffering from Candida.

It is no secret that sugar is harmful and can take a toll on our body. Refined white sugar makes it more difficult for our bodies to absorb the minerals and vitamins. The body requires excess vitamin B to metabolize and detoxify sugar. The problem with sugar is that because it is stripped off nutrients, but contains calories, the body does not receive any of the nutrients it needs from food. Stevia on the other hand contains the following nutrients (varies depending on extent of refinement):

Vitamin C, Beta-Carotene, Chromium, Cobalt, Vegetable fat, Fiber, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Niacin, Phosphorus, Potassium, Protein, Riboflavin, Selenium, Silicon, Sodium, Thiamin, Water and Zinc.
