People have consumed Stevia for centuries in the Latin America with no known side effects. Individuals who can not tolerate sugar or other sweeteners can easily use Stevia.

Traditionally it is indicated as a cardiotonic, anti-gas, obesity, acidity (heart burn) and hypertension reducing, and to lower uric acid levels. Research also suggests that Stevia help fight bacteria. It is considered an effective medicine to help in the maintenance of a "perfect health balance".

Substitutes of Sugar

Stevia is a beneficial and nutritive replacement for sugar or other non-nutritive sweeteners. Stevia can be used as alternative to sugar for all products where sugar is used but only very small quantity of Stevia is required.

With regard to its sweetening power, it is estimated that one pound of white Stevia extract powder will do the same sweetening as 300 pounds of white sugar.

Stevia has been used by diabetics for centuries as a sweetener and a method for controlling blood sugar levels. This herb normalizes blood sugar levels and therefore promotes a consistent energy flow, unlike sugar, which causes a rapid peak in blood sugar followed by a crash then a craving for more sugar.

Studies have shown that Stevia has been used successfully by diabetics and those suffering from high or low blood pressure. Stevia can reduce high blood pressure levels too. It has been prescribed by physicians in Paraguay in the treatment of physical conditions mentioned above.

One study in Brazil involved eighteen average, healthy human volunteers between the ages of twenty and forty years. During the test they were given tea prepared with Stevia leaves for thirty days, and it was found that 10-percent lowering of blood pressure occurred (Boeck, 1981). Although this study gives an indication of stevioside's effects on lowering blood pressure, certainly more human studies are needed before we can know the full vascular effects of stevia consumption.

Stevia can help improve digestion and intestinal functions. It is non reactive to the human digestive tract, it enters the body as a plant extract and then leaves as fiber without irritating the stomach. Stevia helps to relieve constipation.

Nutrition

In fact, Stevia extract basically improves immune system with excellent healing capabilities. If placed on a cut, it stings initially followed by a significant reduction in pain and accelerate healing.

Whole leaf Stevia mesh can be used as a facial mask by smoothing the dark liquid over the entire face, allowing it to dry for 30-60 minutes, then rinsing. This will help tighten the skin, smooth out wrinkles and heal skin blemishes and acne.

This has been reported to be effective when used on seborrhea, dermatitis and eczema, as well.

Stevia is also beneficial for the hair and scalp; good results have been obtained by adding Stevia concentrate to shampoo, and also applying concentrate to the hair after shampooing, allowing it to remain on the hair for a few minutes, then rinsing.
